South Bohemian Museum in České Budějovice
The South Bohemian Museum is one of the most important cultural institutions in South Bohemia. It can be found in a monumental building in Dukelská Street in České Budějovice. The museum focuses on the South Bohemian region, mapping its history, culture, folk art and nature. In addition to permanent exhibitions, the museum regularly organises short-term thematic exhibitions, lectures, concerts and other cultural and educational programmes, and provides expert advice to the public and partner institutions. The monumental building, built between 1899 and 1901 in the historicist Neo-Renaissance style, was opened to the public in 1903. For example, travel writer Dr. Emil Holub, who used his 400 guilders honorarium to finance his planned trips to Africa, lectured at the museum. On this occasion, he also donated a collection of natural history, ethnographic material and a set of his published writings to the museum.
During the complete reconstruction of the main building in 2012-2014, the museum received a new façade, the interior spaces were modified, barrier-free access was established and a new entrance to the museum was opened from Senovážné Square. The museum is open to visitors all year round.
