Church of St John the Baptist and St Procopius
The Church of St John the Baptist and St Procopius is the oldest Gothic church in České Budějovice. It dates to the 13th century and is situated behind the Družba department store; it was formerly part of the so-called Old Town of the original settlement of Budivojice, which existed even before České Budějovice was founded. Until the completion of St Nicholas Cathedral, it served as the parish church. It is a single-nave structure with a rectangular tower holding two of the oldest bells in the city made in 1546 and 1548. Both the nave and the presbytery contain preserved fragments of Gothic murals. The first structural modifications of the church were made around 1461 in the spirit of the Late Gothic, another change came in the 16th century, and the latest reconstruction to date was performed in 1977. The Old Town Cemetery is laid out around the church. Jan Valerián Jirsík is also buried at the site.
