Premysl Otakar II Square is famous for its almost regular square ground plan and an area of more than one hectare. It is thus one of the largest square squares in the Czech Republic. It bears the name of the founder of the town, who was the Czech King Přemysl Otakar II in 1265. The square was already laid out at the founding of the town

The 48 Baroque and Renaissance houses with Gothic core.

The square has served since the town's foundation as a basic landmark, a venue for markets, worldly and church festivals and punishments on the pillory. The exact location of the pillory can be determined in the square by the so-called fading stone - the only remnant of the original pavement. It is located a few steps away from the Samson Fountain (where the pillory originally stood) towards the Zvon Hotel.

But be careful in the evening and keep an eye out for the stray stone. It is said that whoever unknowingly crosses the stone after 10pm will no longer find his way home and will have to wander the streets of České Budějovice until morning.

An interesting fact about the square is that České Budějovice used to have trams in the centre. You can tell by the "rounded" corners of the square.
