Aleš South Bohemian Art Gallery – Wortner House
TOP - a recommended destination in České Budějovice
The Wortner House, a beautifully restored Gothic-Renaissance building, is located in U Černé věže Street in České Budějovice. Sometimes the house is referred to as Žižka House, based on the documented historical event of Jan Žižka of Trocnov making an appearance in U Černé věže Street in 1378. Together with his friends, he plays a part in a preserved promissory note. The current name is derived from the Wortner family, who became the property owners in 1860.
The Renaissance building dates to the first half of the 16th century. It stands on the site of two originally separate Gothic houses, later merged by crenellation. Until the pogrom of 1506, they had been used by the Jewish community, and had Christian owners only afterwards. The building was reconstructed several times, in 1911 and 1989-1992. Since 1993, the Wortner House is home to a branch office of the Aleš South Bohemian Art Gallery (AJG). The house is used for short-term exhibition projects of the AJG and accompanying programs, guided tours, educational activities and concerts.
